What To Pack In Your Emergency Supply Kit

No matter where you live, you are susceptible to a number of different instances that may leave you without power for a few days. Whether it be a power outage or a bad storm, don't ever assume that you won't be in that position one day. Things happen fast, so if you live in an area prone to earthquakes or fires, you should already have some type of emergency plan in place, including an emergency stockpile. If not, you'll want to read further in order to learn about what you will need in the event of an unforeseen emergency. So stock up on your batteries, have some extra candles, and follow the following tips on preparing an emergency preparation kit.

The Key to Being Prepared is to Prepare

Gather some air-tight storage bins to store your items in. Make sure you place these bins where you will be able to easily access them, maybe the easiest location would be your garage or basement. Clearly label the bins so you don't have to go digging through them all to find the items you are looking for.

Inside the bins, place the following items:

  • First aid kit
  • Battery-powered radio and a lot of extra batteries
  • Flashlights
  • Candles and matches (inside a waterproof container)
  • Three-day supply of water and non-perishable foods. For the water, plan on one gallon of water per person a day
  • Hygiene items and paper towels, moist towelettes and feminine supplies
  • A whistle
  • Extra clothing
  • Cooking utensils and can opener
  • Photocopies of all important credit and identification cards
  • Cash, including extra coins
  • Medication, prescriptions, eye glasses, and batteries for medical and hearing aids
  • Supplies for infants
  • Duffel bags in the event you need to leave quickly

You may want to also have a supply of cold-weather clothing on hand, such as hats, scarves, mittens, long sleeve shirts and pants, coats and jackets. Also have a variety of blankets on hand as well.

Don't forget your pets, have a supply of food, medication and enough water for them, as well.

Kit for Your Car

You should have some items packed away in your car if you need to evacuate. Have an extra set of clothes, a pair of closed-toe shoes, blankets, food and water. You may also want to keep a few empty bins on hand so you can pack items up in a hurry when you're needing to leave your home. To learn more, contact a company such as Shelton Battery, Inc.
